![]() You can always put them back in if you prefer the stock amp. I'd say 9 out of 10 prefer the amp without them in there. Vox pathfinder mods mod#Since I first put up the mod over a year ago there has been a few dozen that have removed them. It sort of gets that vibe which imo is a lot better than the stock LED distortion. The Stones recorded with solid state Vox's in the mid to late 60's. Also when you push the gain up you don't get that 80's metal distortion, it's a more tube like distortion. By removing those two LED's you get a significant bump in volume and headroom. Many myself included didn't like the boost function either or found it unusable with them in there. In the Vox Pathfinders (and a few others like the Cambridge) they used it to get an overdrive effect but to mine and many others ears it's not the greatest. It's not a great way to go about it, you see it more often in distortion pedals because again it's a cheap way of doing it and it does not take up a lot of room on an already small circuit board. It's a cheap way to add distortion to a circuit but at a high insertion loss meaning that it robs a lot of volume. Hey guys! The LED's form a shunt clipper circuit. Just snip or unsolder these two LED's on the circuit board and you're golden. With its low weight, wide frequency range and now big bump in headroom and output volume it's an easy grab and go rig. I was too, it was an earplug sort of affair.Īfter that jam I feel comfortable bringing that PF15r out to just about any gig. The other members were pretty amazed that it could keep up and that it sounded great. There seems to be a consensus (myself included) that the gain control is, well pretty useless as the distortion is less than favorable. Vox pathfinder mods mods#I could still get whatever amount of breakup by turning up the gain and pulling the volume back. Someone recently was inquiring about mods for the Vox Pathfinder 15/15r amps and I had a look see at what could be done to improve the amp a bit. With the boost engaged I had plenty of clean headroom on tap in fact I had to turn it down some. I was feeling the same way after I saw their half stacks. When I first rolled up I got the impression from them that I should have brought another amp. Even then the band would have to turn it down some so I could be heard. Everything would have to be maxed out and the amp would produce a lot of distortion. ![]() The PA could not keep up with the band (vocalist screaming throughout) but the Pathfinder with the LED mod sure did.īefore I did the mod the amp would just barely keep up in a setting like that. Two other guitarists with half stacks and a bassist with a 200W rig. I recently sat in with a very loud punk act that has a heavy hitting drummer. I have not had a chance to sit in with a really loud band since performing the mod to the amp and wanted to share my findings. About a year ago I posted my LED mod for the Pathfinder to the forum. ![]()
